Managing Alarm Contacts Supplement

Parts of the Editing Screen

Contact Name – The name can be edited in this field. A contact must have a non-blank name entered here.

Description – The description can be entered and edited in this field and is purely optional.

Email List – A list of email addresses can be entered here for the contact. Email addresses are entered separated by the semi colon character. No format checking or verification of email addresses is performed on this screen. Email addresses may be single emails or group emails.

SMS List – Currently this supports SMS “email to SMS gateway services” so the same format of addressing as email list is entered here (alerts arrive with different message formatting for addresses entered in the SMS list). No direct entering of SMS numbers is currently supported.

External Alarm List – If this facility is created on the system this allows selection of any defined external alarm list to be notified for this alarm. If no external alarm list facility has been created on the system, these lists will be blank. A user can select an external alarm list from the left hand list and allocate it to this contact. Similarly, the external alarm list can be de-allocated here for this contact.

Full documentation of what an external alarm list is, how it is created, maintained is outside the scope of this document.

Managing Contact Hours, and Out of Hours, Notifications

When a contact is created default contactable hours of all day, every day are assigned to the contact. These can be amended on screen in the section marked “Hours of Day for contact to receive alarm notifications”.

Ranges of hours can be created within one day. No checking is done either on overlap of ranges or on start times being after end times on the screen. It is up to the user to ensure valid time periods.

The time control pairs will accept valid times in 24hr format, e.g., 00:00 to 23:59

Shorthand hour input is allowed. Entering 14 in a time control will change to 14:00 when focus is moved from the field.

To add one or more rows to enter new time ranges, click on the green + button, at the lower right of this area. New pairs of time controls will be added under each day each time the green + button is clicked.

To get rid of a particular time range on a day click the red x button, beside each time pairing range.

Example of editing

In this example:

  • Sunday and Saturdays have been set to no contact (empty set of times is same as no times supplied).
  • Monday has been set to receive alarm notifications between 08:00 and 12:00 then 13:00 to 15:00 and finally 17:00 to 17:30. Alarms raised outside of these times will not be sent in email/SMS notification to this contact.
  • Tue, Wed, Thu have been left as notify all day (00:00 to 00:00)
  • Friday is notify only between 12:00 and 17:00

When Save is clicked on this contact the above entry grid will be simplified with blank rows removed. Any incomplete entries removed. So the above example grid will look as below after save is clicked.

Editing an Existing Contact – Highlight the name in the contacts list by clicking on it and then click on the “Edit Selected” button. One contact may be selected at a time. Alternatively, just double click on the contact to open it in the editing section.

Pending Edits – If a user is part way through edits but has not saved them and tries to move off the page (to another website page or to edit another contact) a warning message will be displayed with option to leave the page and lose any pending changes or remain on the page to continue editing.

The format of this message will vary from browser to browser. Above is Internet Explorer browser format. Below is format that the Firefox browser will display.
